Street Scenes New York in 1939 And the Early 40's
|
These sketches reflect his first impressions of New York in 1939 and in the early forties. They are on inexpensive slips of paper, no larger than 5 by 8 inches. Many are smaller. Nearly all were hastily done in pencil on the street, in restaurants, or on a subway. I have always thought they present a very true and accurate portrait of New York in the early forties. I have more than 140 of them. Here is a sampling. |
